2007 was another great year
It started with a record breaking snow fall and then the completion of our new lodge building and
only got better. With all the construction going on, we didn't get to fish much until the first week in June. The Sea Otters
showed up in droves. There were rafts of hundred of them scattered all around the area. This was devistating to the Crab fishing
but the cleaned the Basket Star population back as well as alot of kelp eating critters. The Coho and King bite was on and
the Halibut were starting to move around. By the last week of June fishing was heating up. The Halibut size increased as well
as the Pink bite going off the chart. The Kings slowed but continued to show until mid August. The Coho remained good until
mid August and then slowed picking up again in mid Sept. The first two weeks in August hosted the biggest Halibut. 100 pound
club pins where handed out left and right with 37 happy anglers receiving them. The biggest where 349, 260, 2-224, 8-180,
and a bunch between 175 and 100pounds. The weather was great with little rain. Temps in the high fifty to high seventy range.
Lows averaged about 45. All in all it was just another Great Year. Thanks to all that helped with the new building and all
the great guest that came up for the adventure.
Wow!!! 2006 was the strangest ever. We started off with a mild King run in April and May. The weather was cooler than
normal and there was some major gully washers all summer long. Bear seamed to have a stronger presents than normal and the
Eagles were thick during those early months of summer. I counted 90 Bald Eagles feeding in the mouth of the bay. It got so
bad that no critter was safe. They desimated the mink and martin population before moving along in June. The Whales were slow
in showing but arrived in numbers by eary June. Water temps were cooler than average by about 10 degrees. This may explain
why the Silvers were slow in arriving and the Kings stayed at least a month longer. The halibut were plentiful with two 250
hung (one was lost at the boat when a commercial gaff straightened out). 22 guest recieved the 100 lbs. club Halibut
pins. I won't tell you about the 40 pounder that came unpinned when I shot it but I will tell you about
a 215 lbs Halibut that was landed by Mark in a skiff, with the help of the rest of his group. They harpooned it and loaded
into his 16 ft Lund (I would have bet on the fish) but they did great and nobody got hurt. We got a couple of 180's a bunch
of 130's but we also go a lot of 25 to 40 pounders. We caught three 80 lbs. Ling, these five foot monsters of the deep where
eating the paint off the boat all summer into the middle of Sept. In June on a trip to Corination, with five anglers, we released
73 Lings (most in the 30 to forty inch range) in one day. The Yellow eye (Red Snapper) bite was wide open for much
of the summer as well. Just about everyone caught the biggest and the most fish ever. We are just stoked that we could be
part of the Great Alaska Experience. Thank you all for joining us this year. You made it a fantastic and memorable season
for us.
The summer of 2004 was hot and dry. The fishing was sub par and it was the second week in September
before the late Coho run started in full swing. Some say it is the water temp. and some the lack of rain (the least amount
on record) caused the fishing to slack up. We still filled many coolers and had a great time enjoying the beauty and wonder
of this incredible place. Our biggest halibut was taken by Mike Bechtold. It weighed in at 142 pounds. When the fishing here
slacks up it is still better than most other places.
The summer of 2005 was seasonally normal year. We had plenty of rain and the temps where more like
those in Seatle. The fishing was very good with the Highlight being the record breaking Pink Salmon run. Those that
took the opportunity to battle them on 6 lbs. test had their hands full. They were so plentiful that most guest tired of catching
them and tried to fish a little deeper to escape the mass of fish. Halibut fishing was great and most everybody limited. They
all but quit biting the first week in Sept. Corey Bettencourt (14) battled and landed a 110 pound Slab, out fishing the rest
of the family and that was doing something because they all hauled in a bunch of fish. The Ling arrived early and stayed late
with Bill Toth releasing over 20 in one day while fishing Coranation Island. Bill also caught a "World Record" Giant
Marbled Sculpin. off of Strait island. It wieghed about 16 lbs and was about 32 inches long. Bill also holds the world
line record for a fresh water fish on 15 lb. test when he landed a 230 lbs. West Nile Perch in Egypt.
The largest Halibut weighed 144 lb. the second weighed in at 142 lbs. Both taken in Late July.
The same four guest landed over 500 lbs of Halibut in about 6 hours on the Mikasta.
Largest fish caught off the dock went to Mike Searing for a 4 lbs Pink salmon. Mike was disquallified
because he was supposed to be working at the time. He indicated that he didn't care and that it was worth it to land it on
6 lb. test.
The Dockwieler Family Caught the most fish in the least amount of time with all five of them limitting
out with big Halibut in less than two hours.
A very special Thank You to all of our guest. We enjoyed having you fish with us.
